30 LANCASHIRE BUSINESS DAY
SANDRA TAKES THE PLAUDITS ON LANCASHIRE BUSINESS DAY
Lancashire Business View’s personality of the year was revealed at a special celebration of the red rose county and all the businesses and organisations that call it their home.
Sandra Cottam-Shea, managing director of SCS Logistics, became the first person to receive the new honour to the prolonged ovation of more than 100 guests at the magazine’s Lancashire Business Day event, held in the newly refurbished Accrington Stanley 1968 Lounge.
After an enforced break due to the pandemic, which saw a series of online events, the afternoon gathering once again brought the county’s business community together in person to celebrate Lancashire Day.
They heard of SCS’ impressive community and charity support work and Sandra’s personal and business journey, founding a Heysham headquartered transport company that today operates across Europe and has a turnover in the region of £3.5m.
Sandra, who was raised in Preesall and held a host of roles in the care and travel industries before starting SCS, including training as a nurse and spending 19 years as a senior member of British Airways’ long haul cabin crew, was clearly shocked by the honour, describing herself as a “proud Lancastrian”.
Speaking earlier as a member of the Lancashire Business Day panel, she told the audience how her company had worked to become more involved in the community and described her team as “knights of the road”.
The audience also heard from George Critchley, chairman of True Bearing Chartered Financial Planners, who shared his organisation’s current growth journey through acquisitions, and Ram Gupta, managing director of IT business Nybble.
Ram spoke of the importance of staff feeling valued in an organisation and told the audience: “You have to set your purpose”.
Peter Ahrens, newly appointed managing director of Leyland Trucks, was also a guest speaker at the event. He outlined the business’ accelerated drive towards electric vehicles and the opportunities ahead.
He said: “There is nothing going to stop us from continuing to improve. We are continuing to make investments to continue growing and to continue delivering better products.”
Peter, who has arrived in Lancashire from Leyland Trucks’ parent company PACCAR in the US, was also full of praise for the apprenticeship programme he found in place.
He said: “It is fantastic. The number of long-term valued employees that have come out of that programme is amazing. We have nothing remotely close to that in the US.”
We are continuing to make investments to continue growing and to continue delivering better products
The Lancashire Business Day event took place in person for the first time in two years. It was held in association with +24 Marketing, Beever and Struthers, Bigtank Video Productions and Burnley College and was supported by
Burnley.co.uk. Age Concern Central Lancashire was the afternoon’s charity partner.
The official Lancashire Day proclamation was delivered by Simon Entwistle of Top Hat Tours and musical entertainment was provided by Lancashire singer-songwriter Katie Nichols.
Commemorated every year since 2017, Lancashire Business Day coincides with Lancashire Day, which celebrates the day in November when the county first sent representatives to parliament, more than 700 years ago.
