A NEW APPROACH TO EMPLOYEE RELATIONS by Helen Russell
HR consultant, Harrison Drury Solicitors
With the war for talent, skills shortages and the great resignation all hot topics, the start of a new year may trigger workers to re-assess their work/ life priorities, and even think about looking for a new career.
With many existing and prospective employees expecting even greater flexible working arrangements, employers will likely wonder ‘how can I attract, but more importantly retain, valuable workers?’
For those prepared to think long- term, part of the solution is quite simple. Keep your current team happy and retain the talent you have already invested in.
So how can this be achieved?
This can be done through various ways. Firstly, by ensuring you have an effective selection process so that you offer roles to the right candidates in the first place.
Following this, adopt an effective induction programme so new
starters integrate with the rest of the team right from the start.
When recruiting new people, be clear about what you expect them to do and achieve, ideally in a way that enables them to link their contribution to the organisation’s success.
Encourage collaborative working so employees have a strong supportive working relationships, and provide opportunities for them to learn and develop.
Also, make sure you have a transparent process to enable them to progress in their careers.
Most importantly make sure you allow for fair reward among your workers and learn lessons by listening to people who leave.
If you do decide to make this your 2023 resolution for your business - make a start by seeking HR and employment law advice from a qualified professional.

HOW TO CREATE A HAPPY AND PRODUCTIVE TEAM by Emily and Laura Leyland
Co-founders, Fresh Perspective
Do you want your team to be happy at work?
Knowing how to motivate, incentivise and inspire can be a minefield but if you nail it you’re onto a winner!
Firstly, let’s start with the why.
Your team are your most treasured asset and we, at Fresh, believe your job as an employer is to take care of your people – and they’ll take care of everything else!
A happy and content team will look after your customers like they’re kings and queens, productivity levels will soar, they’ll go the extra mile, and be on board with your vision for success.
They’ll champion your brand and reputation - telling everyone they love their job, making hiring a walk in the park with people who are in it for the long haul.
It’s not as costly and time-consuming as you might think either.
1. First impressions count. Retain the excitement and enthusiasm you brought in the interview into your onboarding.
2. How does your workplace feel? Make it somewhere they want to be - if you build it, they will come.
3. Communicate. Get the team involved, ask for opinions and implement their ideas.
4. Care about wellbeing, counselling, mental health support, exercise at work and teambuilding.
5. Offer progression, training and development. Purpose is vital to human beings.
6. Invest time, thought and resources. Incentivise and give them responsibility. Trust and delegate.
Often, it’s the small things that matter, so think baby steps rather than huge changes and perhaps start with an anonymous employee survey - which we can help with!
