TRANSFORMATION VITAL IN AN EVER-CHANGING WORLD


We brought our panel together as part of our Lancashire Business Day celebrations at Accrington Stanley football club. Our broad themes for the event were transformation and celebration. Here, we asked our experts to consider what transformation means to them and its role in their organisations


What do you understand transformation to mean?


RG: It comes down to what we do best, it comes down to evolution. You’ve got to change the way you do things to be better at what you do. If we evolve as a business, evolve personally, evolve our skillsets, it automatically creates a process of transformation.


DW: It is lots of small changes built together to make a much larger change. We talk in our world about being agile, so it’s agile development. We’re constantly looking at how we can pivot and change to improve our processes. Everyone around this table has had to change and transform a lot over the last few years, given the challenges that are out there.


RH: For us, its is based on the things that got you into business or working with people, your core values. But then having the ability to ebb and flow, with those values still underpinning things. It is evolving and shaping, with that anchor of values at the base.


That value set allows transformation to take place and that never waivers. The core will always be with you and that is what gets us through change and that allows us to adapt and become better.


IR: Transformation is the continual development of the business and dealing with the issues around you. As a business we’re transforming every day. Whether it’s the challenge of Covid, digital problems, we are constantly dealing with those issues and dealing with that transformation on a day-to-day basis.


KI: It was a bit of a fashion about ten years ago, people would have a transformation programme and they’d bring in a transformation manager. It is not something you can do as a one-off, it’s part of your culture in an organisation and you do it all the time.


People think local government moves slowly but we are very dynamic. We probably face change more than anybody and every time there is a new government we change and we flex and we have to be very agile.


CG: Many years ago, you didn’t hear the word transformation in business, you dealt with continuous improvement, you had a continuous improvement plan, which in effect is transformation.


There is also the personal side to this. You have to ask where you are in your journey and what you have to change in yourself to be able to
