CYBER
SECURITY ON THE ATTACK
Dr Daniel Prince is on a mission to get Lancashire’s SMEs to embrace cyber security, not just to protect their business from online threats but as a genuine tool for sales growth.
The senior lecturer in security and protection science at Lancaster University is working to turn the traditional view of cyber security on its head so it is seen as a positive cash generator, rather than something that has to be done but costs cash.
His message is that SMEs can use their cyber resilience and know-how to grow their business, create new products and increase sales.
Dr Prince says: “Data use and potential threats can actually be used to open doors. Through proper cyber security, businesses can grow and thrive across different platforms.”
To reinforce that message the university has launched a series of workshops designed to help them embrace “next-generation” digital strategies. They are part of the wider ‘Cyber Works’ programme that Dr Prince heads at Lancaster.
He says: “Small companies may be put off the idea of cyber security because it sounds expensive.
“We are looking to put forward a different, positive messages. It is about helping businesses to do better and be more successful, rather than just protect against possible attack.”
Dr Prince says: “Cyber security should be part of their business growth strategy, helping them to sell or do more. Think of it as a business enabler.
“Having strong cyber security and the ability to protect your client base can be a strong part of your brand. Showing your investment in it can help differentiate you from others.
“That difference and the knowledge and know-how can potentially lead to a new service, platform or product or it can help with diversification. It can open up new marketplaces.
“At the heart of what we do, we encourage others to embrace security technology and practices, to help them do better and be more successful, rather than just protect against possible attack.”
