SUPPORT IS VITAL IN THE BUILD BACK PROCESS

Businesses across Lancashire are viewing 2021 with trepidation as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the economy both locally and nationally.

The past few months have been particularly difficult for tourism and hospitality, with key sectors including civil aerospace also badly hit.

It may be hard at the moment to see any positives. However, the way many manufacturers have adapted to the situation they have found themselves, switching production to support the NHS and moving quickly to find new markets, underlines that Lancashire always finds a way.

Accrington-based managed

transport and accommodation provider CMAC Group acquired Ontraccs, an online tool which provides missed flight connection services to airlines and ground handling organisations primarily based at Heathrow airport.

We will need support on our road to recovery. The LEP’s work on a recovery plan for aerospace is welcome and we hope Westminster takes note of what is needed, not only to protect our skills, but to help businesses take on the challenge of diversification.

The vaccine also gives hope to the hospitality sector that there is light at the end of the tunnel. And again, we have seen resilience and innovation, as Lancashire businesses have worked tremendously hard to keep some income streams flowing during lockdown and tier restrictions.

DOWN

Lancashire businesses faced the challenge of a new national lockdown announced in the early new year.

The rules were due to last until at least mid-February as Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned the weeks ahead would be the “hardest yet”.

Non-essential retail, hospitality and personal care services were shut. Schools, colleges and universities also closed their doors.

The whole of Lancashire had been placed under Tier Four restrictions at the end of December in a bid to control the rate of Covid-19 infections.

Lancashire’s public health director Dr Sakthi Karunanithi said of that move: “The restrictions in Tier Four will mean even more disruption to people’s lives and I know this decision will bring hardship to many.

“However, it is vital that we get the virus under control and bring down the number of people being infected.”

A push by some county politicians to avoid all of Lancashire being placed in Tier Four was unsuccessful.

The North West’s economic recovery

was hit by a slowdown in November amid the introduction of the second national lockdown, regional data from NatWest has revealed. The combined output of the region’s manufacturing and service sectors dipped to a five-month low.

More than half of leisure and tourism business in the North of England have lost over 60 per cent of their revenue in recent months and most don’t expect a real recovery to be evident before 2022, a study has revealed. Nine tourism boards, including Marketing Lancashire, were involved in the research.

The extension of the furlough scheme to April this year was a welcome move, along with the extension of government guaranteed Covid-19 business loan schemes until the end of March.

Up to now the furlough scheme has supported 9.6 million jobs across the UK, with more than one million businesses using it.

We all look towards the chancellor’s Budget statement on March 3 to see what support comes next.

The government talks of building back better. We’ve no doubt that, with the right support, we will and Lancashire businesses will play their part in the recovery we’re all working towards.
