DEVELOP YOUR TALENT PIPELINE WITH BLACKBURN COLLEGE APPRENTICES
Apprenticeships continue to be a truly effective way to support business growth and develop a pipeline of new talent, which is needed in every business and is potentially needed now, more than ever.
As businesses re-focus and re-grow following the Covid-19 pandemic, apprenticeships offer the opportunity to develop existing staff skills in new areas as well as bringing new talent and fresh ideas into your business.
Whilst recruiting new apprentices and retraining existing staff members will not have been at the forefront of most businesses’ strategies over the last months, the start of the New Year presents the opportunity for businesses to plan ahead for 2021 and beyond.
Indeed, the government sees apprentices as part of the solution for a post-Covid and post-Brexit Britain, with incentives for employers providing a much welcomed boost to help. Businesses can still benefit from up to £3,000 of additional funding for each new apprentice recruited.
Rated Good for Apprenticeships by Ofsted, and Top 10 in England for 16-18 year old advanced apprentice success, Blackburn College is ideally placed to work with you to ensure the right apprentice is placed with you for your individual business needs. Our team assesses applications to ensure that candidates meet your exacting requirements.
It’s an approach that sees hundreds of apprentices trained by Blackburn College and placed in Lancashire businesses each year.
PM+M apprentices
One Lancashire business who has continued to invest in apprenticeships is Blackburn-based PM+M Accountants. PM+M has reaped the rewards of employing Blackburn College apprentices, with multiple learners progressing on to the AAT Level 4 Advanced Diploma in Accounting after completing their Level 3 qualification.
College apprentices at PM+M have not only met the expectations of their employer, they have exceeded them. They have gone above and beyond to produce ideas and implement new processes to the benefit of an already established and distinguished local organisation.

PIERCE COUNTS ON APPRENTICES AS IT BUILDS FOR THE FUTURE
Pierce, the Blackburn-based business advisory and accountancy group, is building its team of the future through its apprenticeship recruitment.
The scope of apprenticeships is ever expanding, and Pierce’s apprentices have taken up roles throughout the company, most notably its payroll department.
North Lancs Training Group provides the training framework while Pierce delivers hands-on experience in a live working environment.
The benefits go both ways. Each learner adds invaluable experience to their CV, as well as recognised qualifications and pay, while Pierce is able to build a team of professionals equipped with the exact right set of skills.
Each apprentice is given the opportunity to advance once their course is complete. Phil Johnson, for example, joined with the firm seven years ago with no experience in an office environment.
Following the completion of his apprenticeship, he went on to complete his payroll professional qualifications CIPP. Since then he has worked
his way up to become payroll manager of the department, overseeing a team of six.
The team at Pierce was so pleased with this outcome that the payroll department has since recruited a further two apprentices: Layton Smalley and Emily Phelan. Layton has completed his apprenticeship and, as Phil did before him, has moved on to his CIPP studies, Emily is just starting her apprenticeship with NLTG.
Lisa Kennery
Lisa Kennery, payroll director, said: “It wasn’t until recently that we introduced the apprenticeship scheme into our accounts department but it has been a fantastic success, and going forward all trainees at Pierce will complete their professional studies through an apprenticeship.
“The programme provides a full learning programme of theory as well as practical experience for the individual, giving them support and a structured critical learning path as well as the opportunity to document and self-appraise their progress.
“In return, the apprenticeships have really helped us fill a skills gap. Any business who hasn’t considered apprenticeship as an option should do so. For us it demonstrates our business is investing in the future.”
