Two firms join key sector partnership

• New joiners National Grid Gas Distribution and Amey Utilities join 27 leading sector employers working to secure seamless delivery of essential services across the UK

• This follows the focus on creating employment opportunities as highlighted by the Spring Budget pledges to resource upskilling in technical education

Another two leading employers in the energy and utilities sector have joined a growing partnership that is working toward ensuring a safer and more sustainable future for the UK economy.

The ranks of the Energy & Utilities Skills Partnership (Skills Partnership) have been further swelled by Chris Train of National Grid Gas Distribution and Amey Utilities’ Kevin Fowlie joining the Skills Partnership’s high-level Strategy Council.

The Skills Partnership was formed last summer and quickly developed the first-ever Workforce Renewal and Skills Strategy in recognition of the absence of the energy and utility sector’s requirements in the National Infrastructure Plan for Skills and the other key sector and UK wide skills strategy documents.

It is estimated that 20% of the sector’s 500,000 UK-wide workforce will leave within a decade, which could have major implications for the continued, seamless delivery of the essential services it provides - electricity, gas, clean water, waste removal, environmental protection and recycling.

Chris Train, Chief Executive at National Grid Gas Distribution, said: “Energy is a basic requirement for every community, and National Grid Gas Distribution consistently keeps energy flowing to provide heat and cooking to communities through safe, high performing, innovative and enthusiastic people. A skilled and sustainable workforce is vital for us as an organisation and our sector as a whole. I am therefore pleased to join the Energy & Utilities Skills Partnership, as the key utility businesses come together to attract the very best people and work on our shared workforce renewal challenges in close collaboration.”

Kevin Fowlie, Managing Director for Utilities, Amey, said: “Building upon our long standing relationship with Energy & Utilities Skills I am delighted to be joining the Skills Partnership’s Strategy Council. Collaborating with other organisations within our sector to address the skills shortages and recruitment challenges will

provide more efficient and effective outcomes for us all. We are also proud to be one of the companies leading on the Skills Accord** initiative pledging our support and commitment to addressing the skills gap and driving sustainable business.”

Tony Cocker, Chair of the Skills Partnership and Chief Executive of E.ON UK, said: “It is great to know that as a partnership that is seeking to be a catalyst for change, we continue to be joined by such respected peers as Chris and Kevin, from such reputable employers as National Grid Gas Distribution and Amey.”

“The addition of Chris and Kevin to the strategic Council will further increase the momentum of this group of senior leaders that are determined to end talk of ‘skills cliff edges’ and take action to build a sustainable workforce” added Nick Ellins, Chief Executive of Energy & Utility Skills Group, the West Midlands-based expert voice on workforce issues in the sector across the UK, which led the formation of the Skills Partnership.

Mr Ellins continues: “The Energy & Utilities sector delivers infrastructure and essential services for 65 million people each and every day, and also underpins all the main economic and productivity ambitions of governments. The work of the Skills Partnership is therefore critical to UK plc. We encourage policy makers, regulators and key interest groups to work with us to ensure a resilient, effective and sustainable utilities sector.”
