launching in December, while flights to Porto, its second destination in Portugal, started in July. In neighbouring Abu Dhabi, the international airport is finally preparing to open its long- awaited £3 billion Midfield Terminal by the end of the year, which will increase capacity to 30 million passengers with the option to eventually double this to 60 million. Fujairah International, the only airport in
the UAE on the Indian Ocean coast, is being modernised and hopes to attract new scheduled services to the Indian subcontinent and the Philippines during the next few years.
ATTRACTION UPDATE One of the largest events in the UAE next year will be Expo 2020 (ME300), taking place in Dubai from October 2020 to April 2021, which is expected to attract up to five million visitors. This massive six-month event at Dubai Exhibition Centre will include live daily shows, technology displays, performances by leading global artists, parades and other celebrations. There will also be 200 food and beverage outlets at the venue. A range of tickets to Expo 2020, including one-day and three-day passes, will go on sale to the public in April 2020. Meanwhile, Dubai Parks and Resorts (ME300),
which operates Motiongate Dubai, Bollywood Parks Dubai, Legoland Dubai and Legoland Water Park, will be revealing eight new rides opening in 2020 across the parks, as well as updates on the new Legoland Hotel due to open in the first half of next year. Elsewhere around the UAE, one of Sharjah’s
major projects is the development of the Heart of Sharjah heritage district – a 15-year initiative to preserve one of the city’s most historic areas. The project is due to be completed by 2025 and has already been registered in Unesco’s “tentative” list of World Heritage Sites. Sharjah is also continuing to promote Al Montazah Amusement and Water Park, which opened last year and is adding new attractions to enhance its appeal. Ras Al Khaimah is continuing to promote its
diverse attractions including the Jebel Jais Flight, which is billed as the world’s longest zip-line ride, from the country’s highest mountain.
