DUTCH FLIGHTS BOOST GUYANA
TOURISM MALAYSIA DEBUTS NEW CAMPAIGN
Tourism Malaysia (AS600) UK and Ireland director Shahrir Ali and deputy director Azmi Abdullah have announced their Visit Malaysia 2020 marketing campaign. It will focus on attracting 30 million annual visitors by 2020 after welcoming
25.83 million arrivals in 2018. It will also aim to ease entry into the country from Singapore via the Second Link highway, raise awareness for online visa applications in the Chinese and Indian markets and increase air connectivity to Malaysia.

The South American destination of Guyana (CA122) has been boosted by a new European route from Amsterdam. Trans Guyana Airways is working in partnership with Dutch carrier KLM on the twice-weekly route connecting Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport with Guyana’s capital, Georgetown. In 2020, Merlin Entertainments Group (TA160) will debut new Legoland parks in Europe and New York. A standalone Legoland Water Park will be added to Italy’s Gardaland, while New York City will offer a Legoland resort from 4 July. “We have a European first with the
first Legoland Water Park to be located outside of a Legoland Park,” said Dominique Sidley, global trade strategy director at Merlin Entertainments. Speaking of the NYC addition, she said:
“Families with young children can take advantage of recent increases in airlines offering great value for money routes into New York Stewart International airport.”
Suriname to connect with KLM flights to Schiphol, with a total flying time of 12 hours making it the fastest route between Europe and Guyana. This follows increases in capacity
from US carriers American Airlines and JetBlue, as well as a new Air Services Agreement with Qatar. Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) is
targeting four key markets – cultural, nature, adventure and sustainable travellers – because they tend to stay longer in a destination and spend more, as well as developing a community-led and owned tourism model. Guyana has also been recognised for sustainability and recently won the Destination Stewardship Award from the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) at the Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Awards. Brian Mullis, director of the GTA, said:
“Guyana has expended considerable effort in recent years not only to develop an eco-friendly tourism product, but also to incorporate sustainable tourism best practice into all aspects of its strategy.” Guyana welcomed around 149,000
visitors during the first six months of 2019, an increase of 10.7% on the same period last year.
