HARD ROCK HOTELS EXPANDS INTO MEXICO’S WEST COAST

Edward Robertson, Routes News editor

A new hotel on Mexico’s west coast and additional entertainment will be part of the Hard Rock Hotel’s (CA300) messaging at this year’s WTM London. Enrique Martin del Campo, RCD Hotels’ vice-president of business development, said the new 639-room Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos – which opened its doors in July – features eight swimming pools, eight

restaurants and both adult and

family areas. He added with Tui

introducing direct flights from Gatwick to Los Cabos on

Mexico’s Pacific coast in time for the winter season, the all-inclusive resort is set for strong sales. Del Campo said: “It was hard for

customers to reach the destination but fortunately now Tui is launching its Los

LAID-BACK LA PALMA

“Slow” tourism and back-to-nature breaks are the themes La Palma is marketing in 2020, with three pillars taking the focus: stargazing, hiking and cultural events. Raul Camacho, councillor for tourism for Cabildo Insular de La Palma (EU600), said: “La Palma’s pledge to the protection of its skies has been the driving force behind interest in the island’s astrology.” The Canary island also offers

more than 600 miles of hiking trails, plus cultural festivals including Los Indianos Carnival in February 2020.

Cabos flights, we’ll be able to attract a lot of attention.” He argued those visiting the resort will find its surroundings very different from those on Mexico’s eastern Caribbean coast, adding: “There are mountains, deserts and the beach.” However, he said the area is becoming

increasingly well known, especially after celebrities including Cameron Diaz and George Clooney have been spotted holidaying there. Del Campo also argued the increasing familiarity of the Hard Rock brand in the UK will also help drive sales. He said: “A lot of people only think of

the restaurant chain but the brand has been expanding into other areas and the expansion [of our hotels] into Europe has also helped.”

Del Campo added he would also use the event to highlight changes being made at Hard Rock’s three other Mexican properties. They include a new bowling alley at

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, which will also receive an entertainment boost when Cirque de Soleil performs its Bazzar show at the property from 29 January to 23 February 2020.

Rob Gill

Destination Ontario (NA400) will be promoting the Canadian province as a year-round destination during WTM London. The province, which includes Canada’s main hub airport Toronto Pearson and the country’s capital Ottawa, is also focusing on highlighting the increasing range of indigenous activities and events throughout Ontario. Trisha Grant, vice-president, industry

relations and international marketing at Destination Ontario, said: “We are excited for Toronto’s Indigenous Fashion Week in May 2020, together with further developments of our indigenous product. “Ontario is the perfect blend of natural and man-made wonders, and lays claim to some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, alongside bustling cities such as Toronto and Ottawa. “With over 400,000 lakes and rivers, Ontario is home to 20% of the earth’s fresh water, and we have more than 115 provincial parks just waiting to be explored,” Grant added. One recently introduced water-based attraction is LeBoat’s self-guided boat trips on the Unesco-listed Rideau canal. New hotels will also be a focus for Destination Ontario including Delta Hotels by Marriott in Thunder Bay, which opened in May 2019; W Hotel Toronto, set to open in summer 2020; and Hotel Le Germain Ottawa.
