APPENDIX F: Additional Resources
This appendix contains resources that may be helpful in the design and implementation of skills-based instruction in entry-level recreational boat operation.
Website: Amalgamated International & U.S. Inland Navigation Rules For recreational boat operations where the craft is underway, operator skills identified within skills-based standards for on-water instruction are accomplished in accordance with any aids to navigation, navigational rules, and any regulations applicable to the location in which the skill is being executed.
This online resource contains all the current information about the Navigation Rules and Regulations boat operators must be able to conform to when operating a recreational boat. Use it to help ensure instructional programming delivers skills that include understanding when and why operators should use the different skills they’ve acquired.
To access information about the Navigation Rules, visit the U.S. Coast Guard’s Navigation Center at:

Book: US Aids to Navigation System
The US Aids to Navigation System is maintained by the US Coast Guard. It consists of visual, audible, and electronic signs designed to help boaters manage the process of navigation.

Website: ABYC (American Boat & Yacht Council)
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved process used to complete the approval and publication of the standard as an American National Standard is owned by ABYC, an approved Standards Development Organization SDO).
For further information about ABYC or the process, visit:

American National Standards for recreational boating knowledge were developed by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators’ (NASBLA) Education Standards Panel (ESP). Since these standards serve as primary source documents for the design, development, and implementation of instruction in recreational boating knowledge, we recommend using the link below to learn more about the boating knowledge standards and explore their use to design and deliver instruction that integrates acquisition of knowledge within the development of skills for safe and enjoyable recreational boating.
