TSDs, such as this document, are not a replacement for acquiring the appropriate training for how to design, develop, and/or deliver on-water entry-level instruction, or for how to establish and maintain the appropriate structures and systems needed to support on-water instruction. Thus, course developers should receive training on how to prepare a safe and effective approach to on-water instruction.
How many EDU-4 elements do I need to include to ensure an instructional approach will effectively deliver on-water, entry-level skills instruction?
EDU-4 identifies the core set of characteristics to consider when preparing an approach to delivering on-water, entry- level skills instruction. Therefore, education providers should consider all the elements in EDU-4 when designing and preparing an approach to on-water instruction. The specific design of the approach is up the education provider based on the unique situation and conditions for instruction.
Can I change or edit the EDU-4 elements?
EDU-4 applies to all three of the domain-specific skills-based ANSs. The elements in EDU-4 focus on the operating conditions associated with those standards. Therefore, the elements should remain intact and unchanged when course developers design an approach to instruction that delivers those skills within the conditions stipulated in the standards. However, the design of an instructional approach can exceed the levels of proficiency identified within EDU-4. In these situations, the standard remains the same, but the instructional approach changes to exceed the standard. Always take appropriate precautions to ensure a safe learning environment and experience.
Can I include in the design and delivery of a course or program more characteristics than are currently in EDU-4?
Yes. EDU-4 contains the fundamental characteristics associated with preparing and delivering high-quality skills-based instruction in recreational boat operation at the entry level. They were agreed to by experts considering their application across the nation. Characteristics or qualities might exist that are not contained within EDU-4 but are relevant to a specific location or learning environment, and also impact safe boat instruction or operation. Include these additional characteristics in the instructional approach if they are relevant and important.
