• complying with applicable federal, state, and local laws; regulations; manufacturer recommendations; etc. About the Element

• This element focuses on the quality of facilities, boats, and equipment associated with the instructional activities in the course or program.

• “Appropriate” means that boats, equipment, and facilities are available, functioning, and in good legal standing. • “Functional” refers to the aesthetics as well as working order of the boats, equipment, and facilities.

• Laws and regulations are different depending on the location of the learning environment. Ensure the program complies with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, manufacturer recommendations, etc.

• Include a deliberate process for ensuring all vessels and equipment are in good working order and legal standing. Consider daily or periodic vessel safety inspections. The USCG Auxiliary (https://www.cgaux.org) or US Power Squadrons (https://www.usps.org/sss-boating-courses) can also be involved in providing vessel safety checks. Contact them directly for further information.
