Stavanger / Sandness, Norway

Stavanger has some of the most beautiful and well-preserved wooden buildings in northern Europe. From the sophisticated white houses in Gamle Stavanger (the old town) to the vibrant colors of Fargegaten, many of these buildings are now used as storefronts for local artisans. It creates a wonderful atmosphere for some unique souvenir shopping. Among the alleyways of Fargegaten, there’s a growing collection of street art inspired by the city and its stories. It’s a lot of fun exploring this outdoor gallery hidden along back streets and sides of buildings. The weathered roads lead to one of Stavanger’s best-kept secrets, the surprisingly entertaining Canning Museum. The museum shows the long history of the region with canned fish, including some of the original equipment used over many years. The real gift is in the free guided tours that share more interesting stories about the city’s character than any other museum. The only place that could hold more secrets about Stavanger is its cathedral, the oldest in Norway. The foundations date back to 1125, and there are plans to restore the building’s original medieval appearance, including the vivid stained-glass lancet windows.
