Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is like a modern-day fairytale, with picture-perfect streets and avenues; none more so than photo-worthy Nyhavn. The vivid 17th-century townhouses are stunning in the morning light, no matter the weather. a few hours on the rides or simply stop for lunch in the Tivoli Food Hall. For a quicker meal, Danish hot dog vendors pepper the Strøget shopping strip. This is the best place for souvenirs before something else catches the eye: the late sun hitting the turquoise dome of Frederik’s Church. Like a beacon, it leads the way to Amalienborg, the Queen’s winter residence, which is set in a beautiful open square. The final fairytale is the famous Little Mermaid statue in the nearby Kastellet gardens, which was unveiled in 1913 and was a gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to the city of Copenhagen. It’s quite small and can be tricky to see among the crowds, but you should be able to catch her faint smile in the afternoon light.
