Aalborg, Denmark
Tucked away in northern Denmark, Aalborg is a charming blend of character and contemporary art. It’s rare to find a modern city with a treasured and historic Viking site so close to the city center. The popular Lindholm Høje Viking Museum enables visitors to get a glimpse into the fascinating history of the Vikings with stone formations outside and high-tech exhibits inside. Dig even deeper and visit the Gråbrødrekloster Museet, an underground museum that tells the history of an old Franciscan monastery as well as a Viking marketplace. Entry
to this self-service museum is via an inconspicuous glass elevator in the middle of a pedestrianized street at Algade 19. It’s well worth the effort, however, to learn more about the city’s Viking and medieval past. When it’s time for some fresh air again, take a walk through Kildeparken. This open green space is filled with statues, sculptures and fountains. The grand feature is a parade of trees, set up with musical accompaniments from artists such as Sir Elton John and Sir Rod Stewart. It’s a perfect blend of Aalborg’s history with modern artistic flair.
