Oscarsborg Hotel & Resort DRØBAK, NORWAY
Oscarsborg Hotel & Resort is a luxury property housed in a historic former Second World War fortress on a small island, where the dramatic and beautiful Oslo Fjord is at its narrowest. The fortress played a significant role in the resistance to the Nazi invasion of Norway. Early in the morning of 9 April 1940, the
Nazi battleship Blücher sailed along the Oslo Fjord towards the Norwegian capital. The soldiers at Oscarsborg, led by Colonel Birger Eriksen, engaged the ship in an intense firefight, ultimately sinking it with two direct hits from torpedoes. This delayed the Nazis’ arrival in the capital, enabling the royal family, government and treasury to be safely evacuated. The fortress was heavily bombed over several hours, before Colonel Eriksen and his men were forced to surrender. The Norwegian flag that was flying on that day is on display in the main fort, and the damage caused by the bombing is still visible. Oscarsborg Hotel & Resort is located in the
former fortress and surrounding buildings, which were used by the Norwegian military
until 2003, and this sense of history is preserved in the hotel and accompanying museum. The property aims to be the ultimate combination of comfort, luxury, history and culture, as well as a top culinary destination. Oscarsborg Hotel & Resort has partnered with the Norwegian Gastronomic Foundation, which facilitates the Norwegian Bocuse d’Or culinary championship. The hotel is the perfect getaway for couples
or families, and is also a popular venue for banquets, weddings, concerts and parties. Part of Norway’s Historic Hotel and Restaurants group, the property is known for its high-quality food and service. The staff are dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of this unique location, cultivating the ultimate guest experience and maintaining a sustainable link between the past and the future. Rooms at Oscarsborg Hotel & Resort are of a
high standard, with several offering stunning views over the Oslo Fjord. They are decorated in understated shades and elegant furniture, with some following a subtle military theme.
