Imagine this: gliding through a crystal- clear lake, powering your bike across dramatic landscapes and feeling the rush as you sprint to the finish line
Tat’s the magic of triathlon — a sport that keeps you fit, teaches new skills and immerses you in the great out- doors. Sure, you might picture Olym- pic medallists like Alex Yee or Beth Potter, or gruelling long-course races that last all day. But here’s the truth: triathlon is for everyone. As winter fades and days get longer, now’s the perfect moment to set yourself a fresh challenge. Why not make it a triath- lon? If you’re new to the game, here are five exciting ways to dive into your next favourite sport.
SWIM BIKE RUN EVENTS Looking for a no pressure, fun way to get involved with triathlon? Why
not try one of the many introductory Swim Bike Run events taking place all over the country. Non-timed and non-competitive, they’re a great intro- duction to the sport where you can try one, two or even all three disciplines at your own pace. What’s more, at most events the whole family can take part, offering kids the opportunity to develop crucial life skills while having fun with the whole family.
RELAY Not too keen on swimming? Not rid- den a bike in years? Can’t run because of an injury? Why not a get a group of friends together and take part in a relay? Many events offer a relay op- tion, which gives you the opportunity to experience all the excitement, fun and camaraderie of a triathlon while only taking part in one discipline. Relays can also be a great entry into
the sport, giving you the chance to dip your toe in, without training for all three disciplines.
CLUBS Tere are hundreds of brilliant clubs all over the country waiting to wel- come new people to the sport. Tri- athlon clubs aren’t just for those who want to enter races every other weekend — they’re ready to welcome anyone who wants to give triathlon a go. Many clubs have Swim Bike Run Leaders who are specially trained to welcome new people and provide a pathway into the sport.
EVENTS Ready to dive in? Tere are hundreds of triathlon events nationwide. Super Sprints are the shortest, with a 400m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run. Nervous about open water? Choose an event with a pool swim. Most are be- ginner-friendly and perfect for start- ing out. Want more of a challenge? Explore longer distances like Sprint, Olympic or Ironman.
WATCH If you want to see the world’s best in action, the World Triathlon Cham- pionship Series (WTCS) returns to London for the first time since 2013, as part of the London T100 Triathlon on 25-26 July. Big crowds are expected to cheer on British Olympic champions Alex Yee and Georgia Taylor-Brown, who’ll be in action alongside thou- sands of amateurs. It’s also not too late to join them on the start line, with amateur races available from Super Sprint to the iconic T100 distance.
