The head of the luxury brand tells Erica Bush what the $3.2 billion takeover by LVMH means for Belmond and its growing portfolio


Q. What does the LVMH deal mean for Belmond? The announced merger with LVMH represents an extremely exciting development for Belmond. LVMH is the global leader in luxury and home to some of the most celebrated luxury brands in the world. Beyond the value that this deal will create for our shareholders, LVMH has a proven record in acquiring and developing heritage brands, and places a strong emphasis on excellence, identity and expertise. These defining qualities make LVMH an ideal owner – one that will allow our company to grow and take its place among the most important brands in luxury.


Q. Why did you feel it was the right time for this deal? Since joining the company in 2015, we have been on an ambitious path to expand. Having taken great strides to build awareness of our brand, increase the profitability of our existing operations and add several stunning new adventures to our portfolio, we felt the timing was right to explore how we could take our one-of-a-kind luxury travel experiences to new heights. By partnering with a company of LVMH’s unparalleled standing in the luxury space, we recognised the opportunity to accelerate our evolution.


Q. How are the two companies’ values aligned? At Belmond, we challenge ourselves to deliver a standard of luxury that sets the benchmark for service and experience. The LVMH portfolio is defined by luxury brands that have a compelling history, strong identity and are uncompromising on quality. We share an ambition to remain at the leading- edge of luxury and I am excited for what may spring from the combination of such complementary fields of expertise.


Q. What else can customers and agents expect under the new LVMH structure? There will be no change to the world-class standards of service that we deliver to our guests or our trade partners. I look forward to what the proposed merger will bring
