LOCATION: Celebrity Edge is spending its inaugural season in the Caribbean. In the summer, the ship moves to Europe to offer seven to 11-night cruises from Rome and Barcelona.


FIRST IMPRESSIONS: A year before the launch of Celebrity Edge, I visited the line’s Innovation Lab in Miami where the brand vowed the ship would connect guests to the ocean better than any other. And Edge didn’t disappoint, as I found when  boarded the finished vessel. The infinite verandas in the staterooms are a perfect example: at the touch of a button your entire living space is transformed into a balcony, allowing you to walk right out to the water’s edge. Then there’s the cantilevered Magic Carpet over the side of the ship – a unique experience that allows guests to be closer to the outdoors as they dine, as well as offering better access to tenders. Other features that caught my eye included the two-storey ‘martini glass’ hot tubs and the oversized art installations, including a majestic horse, in the tranquil Rooftop Garden.


THE FACTS: Celebrity Edge launched last year and was the brand’s first new-build since Celebrity Reflection in 2012. Edge sleeps 3,373 passengers in 1,467 staterooms and suites, of which 1,012 are balcony cabins and 176 are suites. The faily arket is served by  connecting stateroos, while the ship also has  accessible cabins. There are  restaurants and bars. The traditional ain dining roo is split into four restaurants orandie, Tuscan, osopolitan and Cyprus. On the entertainment front, guests can head to the ain theatre where five shows are on offer over the course of a one-week sailing. Another option is the Rooftop arden. ere you’ll find live usic or ovies shown on a big screen. Then there’s den, a ulti-purpose restaurant- turned-club venue. The line describes it as a sinful fusion of performance art, food and nightlife; however, the venue and its ‘interactive’ actors split opinion among members of the travel trade and press on board for the naming ceremony. Shoppers will also feel at home on Edge, with Tiffany  o, Cartier, Bvlgari and Marc Jacobs shops on board.


WOW: The rand laa, the epicentre of the ship, is a popular gathering spot morning, noon at night. But it’s in the evening, when the atrium – home to the buzzing Martini Bar, speciality restaurants like Raw on 5 and Le Grand Bistro, plus any boutiues  coes alive. The beating heart of the space is a three-storey chandelier from which truly stunning light shows are emitted periodically throughout the evening. Other wows include the stunning Kelly Hoppen-designed spa, and eclusive and tranuil suite-class area, The etreat.
