LETTER OF THE

WEEK

TALK BACK WHAT YOU’RE SAYING THIS WEEK

EDITORIAL@ TRAVEL WEEKLY. CO.UK

Aito was just defending its members

Response to letter: Why is Aito in a flap over Birdfair? WildWings’ booking terms state: “If you book and pay with a travel supplier abroad direct . . . you have no legal or financial redress if things go wrong.” Paragraph 51 of the guidance notes to the 2015 Package Travel Regulations

states: “Traders not established in the UK or another EEA member state who are offering for sale packages in the UK, or by any means directing such activities to the UK, must comply with the UK insolvency regime.” John Brodie-Good of WildWings is obviously well aware of this, plus the fact

that many non-EEA organisers sell illegally at Birdfair, so why did he write to Travel Weekly (September 6)? Birdfair organisers should be embarrassed that an event of

its stature harbours so many illegal organisers; ditto the MP for Rutland and others. As for Trading Standards – well, as they can’t enforce the law of the land, why blame Aito for looking after the interests of its members? DEREK MOORE, chairman, Aito

BA data hacks shows need for quality control

Story: Hackers steal bank data from almost 400,000 BA clients Many senior managers struggle to understand how hard it is to ensure software has been subject to adequate quality control procedures. IT teams are also often under pressure from their marketing department to produce code quickly. These factors can lead to corners being cut. The Information Commissioner’s Office needs to use its GDPR powers to thoroughly investigate and act robustly.

Story: Tui ‘seeking Brexit aviation transition deal’ This is just the kind of situation for which the Brexiteers, who told us Brexit would be easy, should have had a solution. The fact that they didn’t and don’t undermines their credibility.

QUOTE OF THE

WEEK Hordern illustrates ‘unretiring’ is the future

Story: Bryony Hordern quits retirement to join Travel Counsellors This story has made my week. It’s so uplifting to see 50 years of experience in the industry being valued by Travel Counsellors. With longevity increasing by two years every decade, many years of retirement do not necessarily hold great appeal; boredom and loneliness can be key factors in the decision to return to work on a full-time, part-time or voluntary basis. ‘Unretiring’ is the future!

TWEETS THIS WEEK

Sarah Cook @Sarahctravel Congratulations @rob_kenton! You truly are a great ambassador for acknowledging & supporting #womenintravel #TeamTriangle

Neil LS @Fertzy Still @British_Airways haven’t explained why they stored cvv/cvc numbers. And hence why I had to cancel my credit card. #BritishAirways

Haslemere Travel @HaslemereTravel We have three ‘0’ birthdays in the office this week. We’ll let you guess who’s 30, 40 & 60!

“As a scientist I can look at the data, but I’m not a fountain of knowledge on travel. Having some travel nous in

the team is more important than I’d thought.”
