Can easyJet Holidays fill the void? A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR


The collapse of Thomas Cook in September left a huge hole in the travel industry and the question remains, who is filling it? Hoteliers and suppliers are looking to make up for lost distribution while agents and operators are awaiting further replacement of lost seat capacity. If you’re an agent, the options today are probably more limited than at any other time in the past few decades. Until recently there were four main options for mainstream beach holidays: Thomas Cook, Tui, Jet2holidays and dynamically packaging your own deals. With Cook gone, Tui aggressively pushing direct and new Atol rules making dynamic packaging less attractive for many, Jet2holidays has emerged as perhaps the most attractive choice. It is into this market that a relaunched easyJet Holidays has marched (page 5). It’s certainly


welcome that there is another supplier in the sector with an extensive flying programme willing to work with agents. But we still don’t know any details of the timing of the trade launch, and as Jet2holidays trade boss Alan Cross told us last week: “What I’d ask independent agents is, how much marketing support are they giving you? How many people have they got on the road?” Along with On the Beach’s trade-only Classic Package Holidays, a new breed of supplier keen to work with third parties is welcome. But it’s clear easyJet has no wish to become the sort of trade partner that agents are used to working with. For this dotcom pioneer, it’s all about technology, keeping costs low and, as its name suggests, being ‘easy’ to do business with.
