The best of your letters, comments and social media this week EasyJet: New wave of disruption

Story: EasyJet Holidays officially relaunches While it’s tempting to suggest Johan Lundgren is bringing the Tui playbook to easyJet Holidays – with fortuitous timing to fill the void left by Thomas Cook – there is a bigger opportunity at play. It’s easy to frame the package holiday as out of step for a customer base that has been weaned on a low-cost, self-service experience, enabled by digital channels. But navigating the disintermediated travel landscape is hard work for many. There will always be room for someone to bring a wider range of products and services together to remove the complexity. EasyJet’s challenge will be providing additional value to passengers and sticking to a low-cost operating model. EasyJet has built leading capability in technology and data, which will give it a strategic advantage. Lundgren will see the rise in passenger numbers as representing a huge opportunity to reimagine the holiday-buying experience for a digital-first consumer; and for easyJet to launch a new wave of disruption. Simon Cox

@abbottstravel Delighted to welcome Jayne from G Adventures to South Woodford for an update on sustainable travel in 2020.

Flight quotas: Government won’t impose restrictions

Story: Industry must engage in talks with government to reduce the environmental impact of aviation I have to disagree with Noel Josephides as I cannot see a UK government try to restrict its citizens. with regard to flying. After all, we do live on an island and if restrictions ever came in, it would have to be on an international level because of many aviation agreements. And just think how much money it would lose in terms of APD. Patrick Doyle

Jet2: Pay us more commission

Story: Jet2holidays ‘closing in on Tui’ with Atol expansion plans Michelle Stead: As much as we support Jet2 – it’s a good brand – if it wants more agent bookings, it must reduce the gap between the direct price and agent price. Otherwise, agents will look at switch selling to in-house operators that also offer low deposits and more commission – instead of 4% or less.
