Population Pyramids A population pyramid shows the breakdown of population according to age and gender.
The pyramids are divided into halves (with males on the left and females on the right). The ages are divided into groups of five years: 0–4, 5–9, 10–14 and so on.
Choropleth Maps A choropleth map is generally used to show the density/relative change of population in an area, e.g. population density or population increase or decline. Values are normally represented by colour, with darker colours representing higher values and lighter colours representing lower values.
Population density: the number of people per square km in an area/ country
Relative change: the difference between two different sets of data, e.g. the relative change between the population density of counties in Ireland in 2011 and 2016
