Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami, 2011
On 11 March 2011, Japan experienced the strongest earthquake in its recorded history. A magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the Japanese coastline with the epicentre east of the Tohoku region.
The earthquake lasted 6 minutes and caused a tsunami wave that reached heights of over 40 metres. Japan is located in one of the most active earthquake zones on Earth, with the earthquake occurring on a destructive plate boundary.
