Geography Skills Question: OS Maps and Urban Change
8. (i) The 2016 census showed that ‘The biggest change in urbanisation occurred in Sligo county, where 40% of the population now live in the town compared with 37% five years ago’.
Study the Ordnance Survey map of Sligo town below. Identify (using four- or six- figure grid referencing) five services/amenities that you can see that would attract people from rural Sligo.
Look for converging roads. Check the legend of an OS map to see the different types of roads running through Sligo. These roads will have differing amounts of traffic on them. Look for junctions where two different roads meet.
Study the OS map carefully. Only use the evidence you can see. Include the subzone letter first. Make sure you use the correct coordinates: x-axis (eastings) followed by y-axis (northings).
