Question 1 Discuss two factors that would have influenced the origin of settlement below. The first factor has been provided. [8 marks]
With the action verb ‘discuss’, this question wants you to support your chosen factors with evidence. You should choose two clear factors. Explain each factor, then use evidence from both images to support each one.
• What physical feature is the settlement located on and near? Why is this important to first- time settlers?
• What physical feature is offering protection from storms?
• What does the altitude of the settlement appear to be?
1. The settlement is located on a river. When settlers first arrived on the shores of what is now Galway they would have used the river, seen in the second image, as a means of transport. As there were no roads, this river would have allowed settlers to travel further inland. The river would have also meant potentially fertile soil for agricultural purposes. Lastly, the settlement built very close to the river in the photograph means that flooding would not have been a potential threat to settlers when they first arrived here.
2. Exam Hint
For your second factor, use the SEE method:
S: State it clearly E: Explain it
E: Give evidence from both maps
Marks Awarded 4 marks per factor: • 1 mark for clearly stating your factor • 3 marks for developing it and giving evidence to support it Total: 4 × 2 = 8 marks
