Shock Flooding for Cork City
Around 100 buildings and dozens of parked cars were damaged by flooding in Cork city centre following Tuesday morning’s high tide, with damage estimated to run to millions of euro.
Many streets in Cork city were under up to a metre of water. Cork County Council said that a storm surge and high winds that are likely associated with Storm Barbara moved over from Portugal and are making their way across western Europe.
Flood warnings were issued in advance but the speed at which the waters rose appeared to have taken many people by surprise. Many business owners had to bail out water after the River Lee burst its banks.
Cork City Council advised motorists to avoid the city centre for a number of hours up to mid-morning. Gardaí were forced to close off a number of low-lying streets as floodwaters began to make them impassable.
In a statement, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the government would ensure supports are given to businesses affected by the flooding.
