Discuss with friends and at home if you like. You have the rest of the week to try to work this out.
Your teacher offers you the chance to have no homework for one full month by playing a simple game. She gives you 50 red marbles, 50 green marbles and 2 empty bowls. She then says, ‘Divide these one hundred marbles into these two bowls. You can divide them any way you like as long as you use all the marbles. Then I will blindfold you and randomly pick one of the bowls and stir the contents. I will place this bowl in front of you and you may remove one marble. If the marble is green you will have no homework for a month, but if the marble is red you will have extra homework!’
How should you divide the marbles so that you have the greatest chance of choosing a green marble?
Tip: There is no answer that will guarantee 100% that you will choose a green marble, but there is one particular way that will give you the best chance. What is it?
