Listen to a student talking about Figure 1. He makes two mistakes. What are they?
OK. So can you all look at Figure 1? Thanks. Right. Um, this shows the energy consumption for a hairdryer … err … through its life, that is. The LCA. The red column represents the extraction and processing stages. It shows you that they consume quite a lot of energy – um, let me see – 80 MJ per unit – that’s 80 megajoules. Joules is a measure of energy, and a megajoule is a million joules.
The blue column, for the manufacturing stage, shows us that consumption is lower for this stage. It’s 25 MJ.
The purple column represents the use stage. As you can see, it has the lowest consumption. It’s 450 MJ per unit.
Finally, the green column is for the disposal stage. It is negative because energy is recovered at the disposal stage, by recycling, of course. The figure is 30 MJ.
