National Trust South Hams Centre

Who we are? We are a group of local people who share a common interest to conserve our heritage in the South Hams area. To achieve this, we support the local activity of the National Trust throughout the South Hams.

What do we do? We have a very strong programme of social activities through the year. This includes visits, often with privileged access, to famous houses and gardens, and entertaining talks by local experts. Our coffee mornings and lunches are a great way to make new friends. This summer we have enjoyed

coach outings to Mount Edgcumbe and to South Bosent Garden, both in Cornwall. Next came a trip to the wonderful gardens at RHS Rosemoor in Devon and in August we were in Tiverton for a lovely journey by horse-drawn barge on the Grand Western Canal, followed by a visit to Knightshayes. To start off our winter

Our purpose Obviously, we do focus on ensuring that our members get the maximum enjoyment but we do have a serious purpose. The money we raise during the year is donated to the National Trust and is spent almost exclusively on projects here in the South Hams. Since our inception in 1980 we

have donated well over a quarter of a million pounds towards local projects. We have supported work at Overbeck’s, Coleton Fishacre and Greenway plus the coastline, woodland and farmland in the South Hams. Looking back to our first donation in 1980, we purchased a mechanised wheelbarrow for use at Overbeck’s. The pattern of contributing

programme there is a Coffee Morning in Harbour House, Kingsbridge on Monday 17 October 10.30 am. The coach outing on Thursday 17 November is to Sidmouth and on Monday 12 December we go to Saltram (NT) to see the mansion house beautifully decorated for Christmas. Lots to look forward to!

towards local projects which enhance the work of the National Trust in the South Hams has continued right up to the present. Our two most recent donations were made earlier this year. One was to the Rangers at Southdown Farm who look after the coastline, woodland and farmland to enable them to continue with further hedge and wild flower planting as well as improving access to coastal areas. The other was to Overbeck’s to help rescue a desperate situation where Box Blight had ruined the parterre. The parterre has been totally redesigned and is now being constructed for present and future generations to enjoy. Our purpose is to continue

supporting the National Trust so Southdown Farm visit

that here in the South Hams it can meet its strategic objective, “For everyone; for ever”

How we fit in with the National Trust The South Hams Centre is one of many groups which exist to support the work of the National Trust in their area. We work very closely with the local National Trust staff and we share experience with other support groups.
