INTRODUCTION

The Bookseller Buyer’s Guide Non-fiction Spring/Summer 2024

A preview of new titles published between February 2024–July 2024

Using the Buyer’s Guides

The titles listed in the Spring/Summer 2024 Buyer’s Guide are divided into categories, with sub-divisions according to format and age range where appropriate. Within each category, the entries are listed under the publishers’ imprints, which have been ordered alphabetically. All the books included

were submitted by publishers via the online database (Bookseller BuyersGuide.co.uk). Regardless of size, publishers were restricted to submitting 10 titles and/or series per category/imprint, and given a 30-word limit to describe each title. If a title is an audiobook or has an audio edition, it is stated in the title’s metadata. Other formats are as

follows: hb (hardback); pb (paperback); tpb (trade paperback); pbo (paperback original); mmpb (mass-market paperback); eb (e-book).

T

he received wisdom is that in times of difficulty readers gravitate to escapism. If you look at historical book sales this is a load of tosh; and certainly was disproven in a trying 2023 where categories such as history and political books flourished. This year looks to be similarly testing—ongoing

economic difficulties, the Middle East a tinderbox and the possibility of a be-wigged orange buffoon reclaiming the US presidency. British readers will have ample opportunities to tackle the issues of the day head on, as some of the more compelling non-fiction over the next six months takes on social ills (cricketer Azeem Rafiq’s memoir/polemic It’s Not Banter, It’s Racism), hot-button issues (former midwife Juno Carey’s look at abortion, A Necessary Kindness) and creaking British institutions (Dr Ellen Welch’s NHS exposé Why Can’t I See My GP?) to name just three. This is not to say book buyers are becoming entirely po-faced, as there are plenty of feel-good stories (Beth McColl’s How to Romanticise Your Life) and guaranteed laughs (Joel Morris’ Be Funny or Die) on tap. But maybe the weightier end of the market—and books’ primacy as a trusted source—is gaining in appeal in a world of ever-increasing disinformation.
