Global travel manager Mandy Chan manages travel for a diverse group of employees working on both Mozilla’s Firefox browser and its not-for-profit foundation


How long have you been in your role? Three years and six months.


How many people are you responsible for in your travel programme?


Our travel team supported 1,900 travellers in 2018 – that includes Mozilla employees and 350 volunteers globally. We’re serious about supporting people and groups who give up their time to help fight for a better internet for us all.


What are your most common routes?


Our top four routes all originate in the Bay Area in California, where we have two of our biggest offices. Travellers tend to fly a round trip from there to either Berlin, London, Portland or Toronto. We have nine offices in North America, Europe, and Asia. When people aren’t travelling between offices, they’re often presenting at conferences or travelling elsewhere – it can be a lot to manage!


What challenges are you currently facing?


Obtaining accurate reports from different regions and sources is difficult. We partner closely with our internal teams to see how we can integrate or automate the reports to improve accuracy and save time and money.


Any interesting projects you’re working on?


We are working on a new Global Volunteer Travel process to help streamline booking for our volunteers. Each year, we support an average of 300 volunteers globally who travel for Mozilla.

Mozilla is behind the Firefox web browser and non-for-profit Mozilla Foundation. It was founded 20 years ago on the principle that the internet should be a global resource, and accessible to all. The Mozilla Foundation aims to “put people before profit on the internet”, focusing on areas, such as privacy, to ensure the internet is a safe and inclusive space


What would you like to change in your policy/programme?


I’d like to add an online travel tutorial for new employees, volunteers or other new travellers. It would be an effective way to educate everyone quickly. Once they understand the policies, our hope is that compliance will also increase.


How do you address sustainability at Mozilla?


Reducing our environmental footprint is important. We ensure company leaders talk to their teams about their need to travel and how they should try to consolidate two trips into one whenever possible. We expanded the trip approval process to ensure managers are aware of the request and agree to the trip, which will minimise unnecessary travel. We launched three additional points of sale in Europe last year to encourage domestic and international train travel. A good portion of our Europe-based employees are travelling to Berlin by train for our upcoming company All Hands in 2020. We have seen a 180 per cent increase in train travel in 2019 so far compared with 2018 (based on the number of tickets).
