Offering some advice on how retailers might expand and add different product categories, our experts agree that you should stick to products not too far removed from your current offering and really educate yourself on those products before you start selling them.


Robson recommends introducing more tiles and surfaces into your offering, and accessories. She comments: “Accessories are an easy way to style the displays in the showroom better and to achieve add-on sales. People get stuck buying products from ‘bathroom suppliers’ whereas the reality is that many items can be used in the bathroom, which offer diversity in the style choices. Mirrors don’t have to be bathroom-specific. Equally, lighting is such an important part of any room, especially in bathrooms. “We also find that a lot of bathrooms extend into dressing rooms or bedrooms, so introducing some wardrobe furniture could be a simple way to add a new product offering and is not quite as complicated as kitchens, for example.”


Gibson adds: “Learn about the manufacturers of the products you are selling. Take advantage of trips to factories if you are offered them. Take a detailed look at what each manufacturer actually sells. It can be surprising the number of useful ‘add-ons’ that can be made to a sale – from drawer inserts in vanity units to wall-mounted toothbrush chargers and robe hooks. Just add them all to the quote to give the client a ‘full’ view of costings. You’ll find that you will always sell at least two items you weren’t expecting to.”


Although adding extra product categories will involve some monetary investment and time to train staff on new lines, there are clear benefits.


Given the almost inevitable economic uncertainty ahead as we prepare to leave the EU, it might be time to start thinking about adding more strings to your bow.
