HEALTHCARE ESTATES
after a two-year hiatus due to COVID, experts from all over the UK are attending and speaking at the conference. Healthcare Estates is a truly unique event in the UK market – the only national conference and exhibition to bring together those who design, build manage, and maintain healthcare facilities.”
Four key themes – and conference streams The four key themes for the 2022 conference have been revised to reflect the issues that have the greatest impact on the healthcare industry; these are: Engineering & Facilities, Net Zero, Strategic and Capital Planning, and Workforce. These themes are reflected in the keynote panel discussion sessions – two on each day of the conference, with carefully selected panellists at the top of their fields, including Annie Shepherd, CEO of Salix Finance, Professor Peter Guthrie, Professor of Engineering for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge, Dame Sue Ion, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Nick Hulme, Chief Executive of East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, and Professor Grant Mills, Professor of Healthcare Infrastructure Delivery, and Faculty Lead for Health, Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, University College London.
Steve Webb said: “After a record-
breaking number of submissions to the conference, the Conference Committee, made up of Directors of Estates and Facilities and IHEEM staff, has put together a fantastic programme featuring a comprehensive range of relevant topics for conference delegates. There are more speakers from NHS Trusts than ever before, making Healthcare Estates the place for peer-to-peer learning, with case studies, and direct experience from those working with initiatives and technology for carbon reduction, facility planning, design, and building, safety, digital infrastructure, building data collection and management, air quality, and space planning. With NHS experts from around the country coming to the conference to share their experiences, Healthcare Estates is the front- runner for learning best practice from those on the frontline.” Among senior EFM professionals speaking will be Simon Corben, Director and Head of Profession of NHS Estates and Facilities, NHS England Commercial Directorate, with an update on national estates and facilities policies, and an audience Q&A at 12.00 pm on Day 1. Also speaking from the NHSE/I
EFM team, in an NHS EFM Update Session running from 2.30-3.00 pm on Day 2 (see page 75), will be Matt Ward, Jo Dolby, and Fiona Daly.
An array of distinguished and high-profile speakers this year will include (from the top): Sir David Behan, Chair of Health Education England; Nigel Edwards, Chief Executive Officer, The Nuffield Trust; Professor Peter Guthrie, Vice-President of the Royal Academy of Engineering; Dr Shaun Fitzgerald, Director of Research, Centre for Climate Repair at the University of Cambridge; Dame Sue Ion GBE, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering; Carl- Magnus Von Behr, a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge; Professor of Environmental Engineering for Buildings at the University of Leeds, Catherine Noakes; Julian Humphreys, Programme Manager at Community Health Partnerships, and Dr Evangelia Chrysikou, Associate Professor at The Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, UCL.

Technical Platforms to present The IHEEM Technical Platforms for Ventilation, Electrical, and Water will be speaking, and there are also four workshops available to delegates, covering Environmental Sustainability, Apprenticeships and Meeting the Workforce Challenge, Diversity and Inclusion, and Estates Strategy – all led by Technical Platform Leads and IHEEM members. Sector experts working with the NHS also make an important contribution to the programme, discussing a range of topics – including ‘smart buildings’, therapeutic architecture, asset optimisation, air quality, achieving net zero, and Modern Methods of Construction. IHEEM has listened carefully to members, Company Affiliates, and exhibitors, and is making the 2022 event more affordable and more accessible; this year’s conference has a significantly revised ticket pricing structure – a saving of at least £50 per day across all entry ticket prices (against 2019 rates).
Over 250 exhibiting organisations The exhibition, meanwhile, offers visitors the opportunity to come and browse new products, new ideas, and innovative solutions, and to talk with experts from over 250 organisations working across the healthcare sector, with a packed hall full of interesting ideas and technical expertise for two full days in Manchester.
Exhibition theatres This year there will be six exhibition theatres, giving visitors plenty of opportunity to catch up on the latest products, regulations, and best practice, with free content for all, and relevant exhibitors providing solutions to the many topics discussed. These will be: The HVAC & Engineering Theatre – sponsored by Bender UK, with a focus on HVAC, decarbonisation, and technical content, aimed at IHEEM members and their colleagues in the healthcare sector. Supported by: IHEEM, CIBSE, and The Society of Public Health Engineers (SoPHE).
The Infection Control and Water Theatre – sponsored by Delabie. The Water Management Society will host meetings and presentations focused on water and infection control. The zone, the biggest in the exhibition, will play host to products and services designed to increase water safety and reduce infection risk in hospital environments. Exhibitors include Tandrup, KWC DVS, IDEXX, Kemper, and Howarth Air Tech. The area and theatre are supported by Closed Systems Control Association, the Legionella Control Association, CIBSE, and The Water Management Society. The Design and Construction Theatre – sponsored by Darwin Group. The theatre features the latest project case studies, and findings from post-occupancy evaluation, plus sharing of best practice in exemplar design and construction. Exhibitors in this ‘zone’ will include Starkstrom, ProCure 23, Armitage Shanks, Gerflor, and T Clarke, making the area a ‘must attend’ for architects, contractors, and clients. The theatre content is supported by Architects for Health, the Design in Mental Health Network, and ProCure 23.
The Energy and Sustainability Theatre – sponsored by Inenco. In-depth content will be delivered by the Carbon and Energy Fund, which was specifically created to fund, facilitate, and project manage complex energy infrastructure upgrades for the NHS. The Climate Change Act set legally binding targets for carbon reduction, and this zone will showcase the latest techniques and innovations in reducing the carbon footprint across the NHS, enabling it to meet its carbon reduction targets. Supported by the Carbon and Energy Fund, and featuring exhibitors including Powerstar, Zenergi,
