Far-right candidate and ex-soldier Jair Bolsonaro 63 defeated his leftist rival in the Brazilian elections. Bolsonaro has been a highly controversial figure and has polarised opinion with homophobic comments, calls for looser gun laws, attacks on the left and praise for Brazil’s 1964-85 military dictatorship.
