MARKET ANALYSIS SWITZERLAND - IGAMING

Roundtable: Swiss iGaming Market

Switzerland’s gross gaming revenues in the online sector rose by 25 per cent in 2021, according to the latest figures supplied by the country’s Federal Gaming Board (ESBK). While its size and population are dwarfed by neighbouring nations, the iGaming market’s growth trajectory has attracted several new entrants in

recent months. G3 taps into the expertise of suppliers to ascertain what’s driving this increase in online wagering and what the future holds for the prospering European market.

The iGaming market in Switzerland continues to grow, bridging the gap closer towards the retail space. What’s driving this increase in online revenues?

Michael Bauer, CFO/CGO at Greentube: It is clear to see that operators are maturing in Switzerland. Tey are getting much better at marketing their products and understanding player preferences, which is vitally important for growth wherever you are in the world.

From a supplier perspective, we at Greentube are growing steadily alongside the Swiss market. Tis is partly down to the fact that we have been able to develop localised content for the market, putting us in a great position compared to other suppliers who haven’t adopted this strategy.

On the flip side, I do worry about the substantial illegal market in Switzerland that’s yet to be dealt with, especially when it comes to crypto casinos and Curaçao licensed operators. I’m not entirely sure that the measures taken so far are working to eliminate this.

Tamas Kusztos, CCO at Playson: I believe that the special regulatory framework that is present in the Swiss market took some time for both casinos and players to understand. It was a bit of a slow burn as a result.

With online casinos being tied to land-based, players needed to figure out the ins and outs of

online casino. In turn, those casinos needed to work out what sort of entertainment their player base preferred. Tey’re now able to deliver a high-quality product and the revenues have followed.

Andrzej Hyla, Chief Commercial Officer at Wazdan: Tere are several factors at play, with the largest being the pandemic that forced slot enthusiasts to play online rather than in land- based institutions. However, a key element to note is that iGaming is still a relatively new phenomenon in Switzerland, and thus is still growing.

By the end of 2021, 11 of 21 Swiss land-based casinos had extended their concession to include online gaming and with around

200,000 active online player accounts. Te total GGR generated by online casinos increased from CHF 23.5m in 2019 to CHR 234.4m in 2021, which is truly impressive growth.

Switzerland is a market that has attracted attention from several reputable suppliers and has grown into a competitive, enjoyable landscape that offers players a plethora of gaming experiences from all avenues of iGaming. As GGR continues to rise in the region, we’re excited by the future possibilities.

Claudia Melcaru, Head of Business Development at BF Games: Te pandemic is one reason we have seen a shift towards online gaming with land-based players seeking out substitute entertainment as retail venues closed. It is worth highlighting that the Swiss online market is still relatively new and as players become more familiar with a digital offering, we are bound to see retention and growth in this space.

Te licensed Swiss operators have also done a fantastic job in partnering with a great number of suppliers to ensure that their product portfolios are wide and diverse, appealing to all player preferences. Tis has made the online offering more attractive to the local audience and this is contributing to the market growth.

From a player perspective, what types of casino games are most appealing to the Swiss audience?
