P10 WIRE / PULSE / INSIGHT / REPORTS
A European standard on Markers of Harm would support the early identification of possible risky or problem gambling behaviour of online players, according to a standardisation proposal that the European Gaming and Betting Association has submitted to the European Committee for Standardisation.
EGBA believes that a reliable, standardised list of markers of harm is essential for preventing gambling-related harm in Europe. CEN, the body responsible for developing standards in Europe, is currently conducting a ballot of its members, the national standardisation bodies (NSBs) of European countries, to determine whether the proposal should be approved.
NSBs had until the end of December 2022 to vote. If the proposal is adopted, relevant stakeholders, including academics, health experts, authorities, operators, and consumer organisations, will be able to participate in the discussions to develop the standard.
A group of leading academics and harm UK BGC calls for action on affordability checks
Britain’s regulated betting and gaming sector has urged Government to publish a White Paper that delivers for business and punters, after a new study showed affordability checks are already hitting revenues.
Research by EY for the Betting and Gaming Council confirmed the sector remained robust despite the pandemic and was now weathering the energy crisis and cost of living crisis. However, the enforcement of tougher affordability checks, have contributed to reduced revenues.
Te report backs up recent polling which showed nearly 70 per cent of people who place a bet said they would be unwilling to allow regulated firms to carry out compulsory affordability checks to prove they can afford to wager.
According to EY, despite the external pressures facing all businesses, which have been exacerbated by affordability checks, BGC members’ total gross
value added contribution to the UK economy was £7.1bn.
Meanwhile, the industry supports 110,000 jobs on high streets, in hospitality and in global tech powerhouses. Te contribution to the Treasury from regulated betting and gaming remained significant at £4.2bn annually. Across the industry, overall gross gambling yield – total revenues after winnings have been paid but before costs are deducted – was slightly up on 2019 despite massive global volatility.
A new White Paper setting out new laws for the gambling industry is expected within weeks. In expectation of Government limits on spending, BGC members have already started applying more stringent checks.
BGC CEO Michael Dugher said: “We urge the Government to find an evidence-led, balanced White Paper that protects the vulnerab, allows the vast majority who bet safely to continue to do so.”
prevention experts signed a joint letter of support for the Markers of Harm standard, indicating that its development would encourage research collaboration to improve the understanding of problem gambling and support harm prevention in Europe. EGBA is urging all gambling sector stakeholders, particularly gambling authorities, to support the standardisation proposal.
Maarten Haijer, Secretary General, EGBA, said: “We urge national standardisation bodies, gambling authorities, and other stakeholders to support this common-sense proposal to jointly develop a standard on Markers of Harm in Europe. Tis would be an essential element to help prevent risky and problem gambling behaviour and support consumer protection.
"Te process to develop the standard would bring together the knowledge and expertise of academics, researchers, harm prevention experts and other stakeholders to work collaboratively towards the common purpose of preventing gambling-related harm.”
Qatar
City Bet Club expects the recent World Cup to have been the most bookmaker- friendly in recent history.
Te tipster service said that tournament has likely been the best ever in terms of margin for bookies, with not a single day during the group stages seeing all favourites winning their game.
With early shocks including Saudi Arabia beating Argentina, Germany’s defeat to Japan and Tunisia overcoming France, the bookies saw significant revenue netted far earlier than usual in the tournament.
As well as significant losses in the group stages, higher than expected revenue for bookmakers was compounded further with multiple 90-minute draws during the knockout stages. As a result, this year’s World Cup is likely to point towards a significant margin-win for betting operators.
