Liechtenstein Castle Casino opens in Vaduz; ups total to five

Liechtenstein has welcomed a new casino with Castle Casino opening in a pedestrianised part of the capital of Vaduz.

Te total number of casinos in Europe’s fourth smallest casino recently fell from six to four following the closures of 96 in Balzers and Casino Maximus in Schaan with the Castle opening bolstering the quota back up to five.

Te Casino im Städtle, which had been announced for some time, received the casino licence from the gambling supervisory authority at the Office of Economic Affairs on December 14 and began regular operations on 16 December 2022.

Te casino offers a wide range of gaming on two floors, starting with 120 slot machines and eight gaming tables as well as boasting the longest bar in Liechtenstein. Launched by Liechtenstein investors, Castle

Casino is the first and so far the only casino in Liechtenstein that is owned completely by Liechtensteiners.

Te management consists of Michael Moosleithner and Tomas Banzer, who previously worked at Casinos Austria Liechtenstein, and Eros Ganzina, who most recently acted as Gaming Manager at the Grand Casino in Bendern.

On January 29, 2023, a referendum will take place on a potential casino ban in the country. No new casino applications will be accepted until 31 December 2025.

Te new casino follows a decision last year by Casinos Austria to shut Casino 96 in Balzers on July 11, citing a desire to 'focus more on entertainment' and solely on Casino Schaanwald. Te casino opened in September 2020 with 75 slot machines and four tables for live games.

British bingo and casino operator Rank Group has issued a profit warning saying that operating profits will come in between £10m and £20m for the year to June, compared with £40.4m over the previous year with increases in the cost of living and a lack of disposable income the main reasons.

Te operator of the Mecca and Grosvenor Casinos brands said the World Cup, combined with unusually cold weather also played a part in a weak three months to the end of December.

“Weak consumer confidence and pressure on disposable income is resulting in a tougher-than- expected trading environment for our UK venues businesses, particularly in Grosvenor we are seeing customers spending less per visit,” commented Chief Executive John O’Reilly.

“We remain committed to our roadmap of initiatives that will ensure the long-term recovery of the Group.”
