Online revenues increased in 2020 due to the pandemic compared to a drop obviously for the land-based casinos. What is the expectation this year for both online and land-based, now things are returning to some sense of 'normality'?
Based on existing reports for the year 2020, while land-based gambling revenues recorded very significant drops compared to 2019, above 50 per cent, the volume of online betting saw growth of around 25 per cent compared to the previous year.
In 2020, the 12 physical casinos operating in Portugal lost about half of the revenues achieved in the previous year (€315.2m in 2019). And in the year 2021, in the first nine months, from January to September, the gross revenues of the casinos amounted to €84.3m, 31.2 per cent less than in the same period of 2020.
In terms of online gambling, there continued to be sustained growth, as during the third quarter of 2021, online gambling and betting activity generated a higher value of €30m (35.6 per cent) compared to the same period of 2020. Tis growth will certainly continue in 2022, probably with the entry of new operators in the market.
As for land-based gambling, 2022 will probably still be a year with lower results than 2019 (pre- pandemic year) but I believe that there may be a recovery in the medium term, all depending on the measures that are adopted.
Is illegal online gambling still an issue? Is this something being addressed?
According to a 2019 APAJO study, around 55 per cent of players still opt for the illegal market. Promoting players' adherence to the legal options available in Portugal needs to involve offering better prices and more products.
Regarding illegal gambling, there is still a long way to go, and it is certain that there has been a positive evolution in recent years. A study also commissioned by APAJO, on player behaviour, shows that more than 70 per cent of respondents say they feel safer with the licensed offer.
What measures are in place for responsible gambling and is this something to be addressed further?
In Portugal, since the beginning of the opening of the online gambling market, the regulator (SRIJ) has created a series of methods to ensure that consumers gamble responsibly. In a first step, complete registration takes place with the immediate identification of customers so that no minor can gamble.
In a next step, each licensed operator must have a responsible gaming page that includes the option of self-assessment of gaming behaviour. Tis page informs you about settings for betting limits and deposit limits, as well as game breaks (ie: the possibility of interrupting the game so as not to chase losses), and finally, it must contain links to professional help institutions.
