New Edition of IEC 61918 Amends Standard for PoDL and

SPE Cabling SCHAUMBURG, IL — A new edition of the Single Pair Ether- net (SPE) standard for industrial premises has been published. The new version now also in- cludes important key points on cabling structures based on Sin- gle Pair Ethernet. This makes it an important basis for all users who want to bring their produc- tion into the Industrial Internet of Things. The new amendment to IEC 61918 addresses the new 1-pair cabling structures for Sin- gle Pair Ethernet (SPE) and the associated remote power supply PoDL (Power over Data Line). This closes the gap between

classic IT infrastructure and in- dustry, IoT/IIoT. SPE has a spe- cial significance for industry and automation. For the first time, it enables the universal application of TCP/IP-based automation pro- tocols even for long distances, as in process automation or for the simple connection of sensors and actuators up to the industrial field level. Higher data rates, more power transmission and greater ranges than with classic fieldbuses pave the way for the
