ENERGY MANAGEMENT & SUSTAINABILITY

all sectors of industry. WCRS works collaboratively with its clients to formulate a tailored plan and ensure each business is up-to-date with all legislation, regulations and administrative responsibilities. The company provides customers with a comprehensive audit that covers all aspects of customers’ Duty of Care including waste management practices, suppliers and disposal routes. These audits not only ensure compliance but also identify areas for cost reduction and improved performance. The effectiveness of WCRS can be clearly seen in its work with Glamorgan Cricket Club.

WCRS began working with the club just weeks before the First Investec Ashes Match in 2015. This was the primary challenge – to manage the waste for one of the sporting calendar’s most prestigious events – with expected visitor numbers in excess of 60,000.

Working in collaboration with both Glamorgan Cricket Club and their cleaning contractor AQS, WCRS achieved a seamless operation throughout and with the first event under its belt, the next challenge was to look at how improvements could be made to boost the club’s overall recycling performance.

WCRS implemented an effective and robust segregation system of Dry Mixed Recyclables (DMR), General Waste, Food and Glass. This was supported by clear and concise signage, as part of an awareness campaign. WCRS also rolled out a series of recycling workshops and presentations to key operational and cleaning staff to help raise knowledge and relay the benefits of recycling as well as the new processes. Getting everyone on board and aware of the club’s aspirations was key to success.

The company focused on the tricky business of match day recycling to maximize the amount of waste materials recovered. Working with AQS, a ‘buddy’ system was introduced for the cleaning teams around the stadium including one cleaner in each team concentrating on recovering dry mixed recyclables.

Results were impressive. Prior to implementing the changes the recovery rate for materials destined for recycling was averaging at around 4% of the total waste. Recycling rates have now risen dramatically, reaching an all-time record for the club of 84%. The remaining residual waste is now sent to a local energy from waste facility plant and therefore 100% of the waste generated at the club is diverted away from landfill.

Waste management isn’t

one of the most glamourous elements of the FM’s role.

The road to sustainability and zero waste is a shared one, where every person and every business has their part to play. As a facilities manager, choosing a reliable, customer-centric waste management partner that relishes the challenge of finding environmentally- responsible solutions for both every day waste and difficult and obscure wastes too, will potentially reduce costs, boost recycling and help you meet your corporate and social responsibilities.
