HOSPITAL & HEALTHCARE FACILITIES

CAREFUL CONSIDERATIONS Robin Harris, Client Services Director at ECO Integrated Property Solutions

(ECO IPS), advises on navigating the complexities of providing sensitive project management when undertaking maintenance, repairs and refurbishment in operational care facilities.

Communication One of the most important aspects of working in care homes is two-way communication. It is essential to inform all staff when anyone is due on site and how long works are scheduled to take so they can reassure residents what is happening and when. Contractors must be made aware of any operational issues, requirements or behaviours of individual service users with a clear and conclusive induction given so they understand the nuances of the property and have all information around safe working for example, with the presence of asbestos.

Consideration Although any maintenance project needs careful planning and management, work taking place in a care home

setting calls for particular consideration in order to cause as little disruption as possible to vulnerable individuals.

Bear in mind the service users and their care needs when planning work. Some residents may have set routines that must be followed in certain complex care facilities. Ensuring continuity of staff can be a way of providing consistency and comfort, building trust between residents and contractors.

Be aware that residents may react to change and something as simple as repainting a room can affect them. Work with your property management company or project manager to reduce the risk of adverse reactions to change and allow for this in the schedule of works, keeping communication open with individuals.
