How do schools cut costs without negatively impacting the quality of service provision? Chris Kindon, Operations Director at Cambridge Maintenance Services believes he has the answer.


Schools across the country are under extreme financial pressure, and with running costs and energy prices increasing, facilities managers are tasked with the responsibility of reviewing and implementing money saving measures; a job that can seem overwhelming. With ageing buildings and an increasing list of compliance requirements, in-house teams can feel they are stuck between a rock and a hard place, facing decisions about which actions to prioritise and which to mothball whilst remaining compliant.

No two schools’ FM needs will ever be identical. Some schools are modern and purpose built, complying with the latest requirements for access, health and safety, and more. Other schools will have been purpose built some time ago in line with a different set of regulations. There are also pre-existing buildings that have been adapted for their current occupiers, presenting some of the more interesting challenges to facilities managers.
