A FACILITIES MANAGEMENT REVOLUTION

Over the past decade, the UK’s industrial facilities have undergone a fundamental shift towards smarter, automated and more efficient workspaces. Lesley Grace, Business

Development Manager at Clugston FM, explores the practical challenges of implementing integrated FM into the contemporary plant environment.

Large industrial sites can prove complex to manage, especially when you consider the myriad of advanced process, plant and machinery in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week in today’s modern facilities. From heavy manufacturing facilities producing steel, to more high-tech sites generating petrochemicals and fuels, advancements under industry 4.0 – the trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies – are enabling faster, more flexible, and more efficient processes to produce higher-quality commodities for their supply chains.

However, as with any major shift, there are several key challenges inherent with the adoption of the smart factory in the industry 4.0 era, none-more-so than ensuring production runs smoothly and without any unnecessary downtime.

50 | TOMORROW’S FM

With varied and more complex process, plant and machinery in place, each with their own individual requirements, the trials of ensuring smooth day-to- day operation are substantially increased for industrial premises. Organisations must balance reactive and planned maintenance, emergency repairs, system upgrades and planned lifecycle replacements just to keep facilities in operation. The challenges, however, are not just complex machinery. Process, materials and environment also give rise to risk and regulation and can significantly impact production efficiency and economy.

Add to this, the regulatory compliance requirements associated with large industrial sites and the challenge becomes even greater for today’s FM professionals. Businesses must now comply with an ever-increasing list of regulations, from built environment standards
