BEATING THE TOILET TRAFFIC Congestion can be a real problem in facilities with high-traffic washrooms. It is therefore
no surprise that customers in a diverse range of sectors are switching to the Tork PeakServe Continuous Hand Towel to help support them in managing their crowded lavatories. Essity explores the environments that inspired this pioneering product.
Stadium washrooms are among the most difficult environments to clean and maintain from the facilities service manager’s point of view. It was against this background that Tork PeakServe was launched – a system that holds a number of key advantages for stadiums.
People who go to stadiums all tend to congregate on the washrooms at once – either before or after the event or during the interval. This makes it difficult for staff to cope with peaks in demand or react quickly when essential supplies of soap and paper run out.
From the user’s perspective, too, these spikes in demand inevitably lead to crowds, queueing and dispenser run- outs which makes a visit to the washroom a frustrating and stressful business.
Essity’s Commercial Director Nathan Titheridge said: “Our research reveals that a bad washroom experience is a particular turn-off for stadium-goers. In fact a recent survey we commissioned revealed that poor washrooms ranked higher on people’s lists of negatives at a stadium than factors such as crowd disorder, long queues or poor food and drink.”
The survey, which polled 3,000 stadium visitors, revealed that more than 70% of stadium guests had had a bad washroom experience. However, only 11% of them had brought their issues to the attention of the venue’s management.
Queues are particularly likely to form in washrooms where hand dryers are installed, since even the most powerful of dryers takes 10-12 seconds to dry the hands. The fact

that the visitor is obliged to remain in place while the dryer takes effect simply adds to the problem of queues.
Hand towels provide a faster hand-dry but few dispensers have the capacity to cater for traffic spikes in particularly busy washrooms. So the problem of supplies running out is difficult to avoid, particularly in venues where visitor patterns are erratic.
“The easy-to-use, high-capacity dispenser can serve more than
1,000 guests between refills – 600 more than existing dispensers.”
Tork PeakServe delivers hand towels in a quick, easy and continuous action that speeds up washroom traffic. The easy-to-use, high-capacity dispenser can serve more than 1,000 guests between refills – 600 more than existing dispensers. Unlike most other high-capacity systems, Tork PeakServe dispenses towels in a continuous loop. This means that no pull force is required to take out a towel and there are no issues with jamming.
“It takes just three seconds for a washroom user to take a towel from a Tork PeakServe unit,” said Nathan. “When the visitor has accessed a towel they can then move away from the dispenser to dry their hands, freeing up space and completing the hand drying process around 75% faster than they could with an air dryer.
“Faster-moving queues lead to happier guests who will also have more time to buy food, drink or a souvenir
