WASHROOM
DON’T FLUSH AWAY YOUR ENERGY
Many UK businesses are looking to increase efficiency and reduce energy costs. Whilst it may not be the first place on a FM’s mind, the washroom can often be a
great place to start. Here, SaveMoneyCutCarbon suggests some measures you can take to make those all important savings.
LED Lighting Replacing standard lighting with LED lighting can be a great place to start. For example, swapping 10 standard 18W washroom downlights running for 12 hours with LED lamps saves £47.30 a year and reduces carbon emissions by 0.21 tonnes.
LEDs last much longer than traditional lighting so you will save money on not having to buy as many replacements. You may also want to consider efficacy (how much light is produced per unit of power) as lights with a higher score save the most amount of money. The EU produces energy rating from E to A++ to help people make informed decisions. All LED is A rated or above, but if you want to make greater savings over the long term, look toward the A++ rated lights.
Urinals and Eco Toilets Low-flush toilets make huge savings in both water and carbon emissions with very rapid payback. Even now that the days of multi-gallon cisterns are long over, a standard toilet cistern often uses nine litres per flush, while a traditional urinal can use up to 768 litres a day. With one waterless urinal saving up to £200 a year, as well as big reduction in carbon emissions, if your facility contains 10 or more urinals the savings can be huge. 1.2 Kw/h of energy and 0.7Kg of CO2 is saved per 1m3 of water saved.
ECO Taps Conventional basin mixer taps use on average around 13 litres of water per minute. Eco taps such as the Hansgrohe EcoSmart range from SaveMoneyCutCarbon reduce water consumption in mixers by up to 60%, to around five litres per minute. These EcoSmart taps work by adding air and

using a special flow limitation system. A “precision elastomer” responds automatically to different water pressure and alters its shape. This in turn limits the flow and constantly saves water.
Saving water is arguably the biggest way to reduce energy costs in a commercial washroom and
this can be achieved by integrating eco efficient features. An investment in facilities that recycle and reuse water will, more often than not, see a good return on any expenditure. There is also the added benefit of it being great publicity for the business; you are demonstrating a real commitment to social responsibility.

The essential starting point on any green journey is a thorough measurement of existing consumption and identifying where savings can be made, whether at a single facility or across multi-site locations.
SaveMoneyCutCarbon use bespoke measurement tools, from the simple to highly sophisticated, to monitor energy and water consumption levels. They are a supplier for a range of energy and water saving products and the company that commissioned the infographic.
