LIGHTING
Types of security lights
There are various types of outdoor security lights available to suit a number of different purposes and premises types:
Floodlights - The most common style of security light, floodlights are typically affixed to a wall or fence to distribute bright and wide-reaching light over large areas. These lights can be kept on for long periods, or set to operate in short bursts only when required.
Motion sensor lights - A built-in PIR sensor, or passive infrared sensor, detects movement and triggers a security light for a short predefined or adjustable period of time. This not only saves energy, but also ensures that surrounding neighbours and wildlife aren't disturbed by constant illumination. These lights are generally available as wall fixtures or stand-alone lamps, with sensors offering a beam of approximately 8-12 metres when the light is placed at an optimum height.
Dusk to dawn security lights - These exterior security lights have a built in photocell which measures ambient light levels and automatically triggers the light to come on when it gets dark at dusk, and then turn off when the sun comes up at dawn (dusk to dawn). This creates the impression that a premises is occupied at night, which can act as a useful deterrent to would-be trespassers.
Manually operated lights - Traditionally operated via a light switch, these lights can be controlled manually from within a premises. A drawback of manually operated lights is that they typically have either an on or off setting, which relies on someone remembering to flick the switch twice a day.
Advanced security lights - Many security lights are bolstered with additional protective features, such as built in digital cameras that can capture videos, images, and sounds. Others also have an option of activating a pre-recorded voice warning which can be set to tell an intruder that they are being recorded on camera, a custom recorded message, or the sound of a dog barking, all serving as a powerful deterrent for unwanted visitors.
