10 QUESTIONS WITH... GRAHAM HUNNEMAN

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Graham Hunneman, Sales Director at Klenzan Christeyns.

Q5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING

INDUSTRY? Better training, and understanding of the risk and solutions.

Many years ago someone tried to sell me a cleaning system that was so complex, that my initial thoughts were all we need do is clean the factory, not fly to the moon.

Cleaning should be simple: the correct products, the right equipment, and most importantly expert knowledge. Another key element is consistent best practices – through monitoring and review.

Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Manufacturing yogurts and ice

cream. I have kept a passion for the dairy industry throughout my career. I am very proud that Klenzan is now the largest supplier of hygiene solutions into the UK dairy industry.

Q2

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I started my journey with Associated British Foods. From then on hygiene just about became part of my DNA and I enjoy the challenge of working with high risk, short shelf life products. Good hygiene practice is the Holy Grail to all food producers: it not only plays a key role in food safety for consumers but it also helps increasing product quality.

Q3 Q4

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR

PERSONALITY? Fun, enthusiastic and determined.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,

WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? Pebble beach, California is my heaven on earth. I am fortunate to travel, both in my private life and with work and I am always keen to discover new places. I haven’t found anything beating this golf course yet. Not only does the Monterey peninsula look amazing but it’s also a wonderful golf course.

70 | 10 QUESTIONS

The way we were cleaning 10 years ago wasn’t as efficient as the way we clean today. Technology and research constantly helps us develop new and innovative solutions.

Q6 Q7

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW,

WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? Work hard, challenge everything and work with people rather than against them. Share knowledge, be innovative, push your capabilities to challenge yourself.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD

YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I wouldn’t change my life at all, just upgrade on the wine and get a bigger garden to own a couple of cows and make my own ice cream.

Q8

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE

ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Muhammad Ali: a sporting legend for me, with confidence and a personality larger than life.

Neil Armstrong: we have many debates at home over whether the moon landings really happened, my partner is a disbeliever and we could resolve this once and for all.

Steve Jobs: has changed the world with technology and continuously pushing innovation. He may also like a nice red and pick up the bill.

Q9

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE

CLEANING INDUSTRY? Part of the future is to be considerate with regards to the environment and water consumption for the generations to come. There will be more regulation and control and a reduction in the number of viable disinfectants due to cost and European regulations.

James Lee, Managing Director at Cromwell Polythene, asks:

Q10

DO YOU THINK PERCEPTIONS ABOUT

THE CLEANING INDUSTRY HAVE IMPROVED IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS? In general the industry does not have a high profile image but with technical advances and chemical innovation, perceptions are changing. Public concerns and food poisoning outbreaks are also raising the profile. It’s a much more exciting industry to work in than it was certainly a decade ago and the future is looking even more interesting.
