MANAGEMENT TRAINING Through the review process,

we are also able to identify those individuals who wish to develop themselves further. Nominations onto either of our management programmes (Reach and Pertino) ensure that each new and current manager has a clear learning pathway that can be monitored and assessed.

TRAINING MATERIAL We have now set up to supplement

every working document related to all tasks and duties our staff may carry out with Trainer Notes. This ensures that all staff who are trained on every task consistently and correctly.

ON-LINE LEARNING To support all these initiatives, we

have introduced a number of new web- based learning sites as well as invested in developing programmes with organisations such as BIFM and ILM. These allow us access to nationally recognised courses and qualifications.

As previously stated; we understand how time-restricted our people can often find themselves. Working to tight schedules and time restraints poses further problems when trying to offer training in such a demanding environment. There is also an element of learning apathy; where

because we have deadlines and a range of variables they can encounter on a daily basis, taking time out of their working day can be difficult.

To try and overcome this we have introduced a new trainer onto our team. TC is a cartoon-based character who introduces and delivers a range of short video clips called Toolbox Talks that cover subjects such as COSHH, Manual Handling and Handling Sharps. To date we have created over 20 videos for Cleaning, Security and for our teams working in Distribution Centres. They have been designed to be used as refresher tools and last for only a few minutes each. They can be accessed via our company intranet of downloaded onto our in-store managers’ handheld devices.

WHAT’S NEXT? We are working closely with our colleagues in IT to develop electronic training records as well as working developing our online offers in order to give teams access to an even wider range of learning material that is accessible across the business.

We are also working on designing a better “onboarding” method of inducting new people into the business. This will centre around more pre-joining course information associated with their new role, making them better informed about the company and more importantly better equipped to take on their new jobs.
